Revealed: Changelings: Rise of Kings

Ebook COverHey, looky here! We have cover art!

And to celebrate, we also have fiction!

The forming of the story that is now Changelings: Rise of Kings was fraught with many a darling, plot-hole, continuity error, and time-travel migraine. Great swaths of story were cut, re-fashioned, and re-purposed, but my favorite was the story of D’s time in England, 1944.

When he revealed to Maureen and Sean in Into the Mist (which is still FREE today if you haven’t picked up your copy) that he had known their fathers – indeed, had grown to care for them as brothers and was there the night they died – I wanted to tell the whole story. I wrote it, but try as I might (and I tried. I really really tried), it didn’t have a place in Rise of Kings – nor does it in the as-yet-untitled Book 3. I’ve teased bits of it throughout the life of this blog, but I’ve decided to release it over the course of the next few weeks – if anything, just to give it a cohesive finale.

Hunted: A Changelings Short

I heard a wild cry echo through the mists, as though hounds howled against the night.

The Plain, Mag Mell, was empty – stripped of all lore, all magic and life – and Niamh Golden Hair’s curses still rang in my ears.

I would rue the day I had turned from her cause, she had said.

As the sound caused dread to prickle my skin, a part of me laughed. There is a reason Niamh is the Fae’s greatest spell weaver and seer, though not many risk the king’s ire to say so.

The mists pressed down upon me. They started to dance. So wrapped up in my own misery – my own heated denial of her visions – was I, that I did not see their grasping fingers twine ‘round my legs.

And then that cry. That hideous, desperate cry.

The king – Nuada Silver Arm. It had to be.

I carried a sword, gifted to me by that same king for wining his war, but it’s blade mattered little. Nothing crafted by man can harm the Fae. Once it was said they could be killed – that the Fae feared man’s iron – but I knew that to be a fairy tale.

The cry which rent the air told me I was hunted. It is always so for those who travel between the worlds. Why did I think I would be any different? The war I won for Nuada Silver Arm had been over for an age – man had already forgotten it as they sped beyond us.

I was a man outside of time, beyond the help of kindred, and I had just turned my back on the last of those who cared.

A haunting wail pierced the air, adding anguish to that wild cry of terror. We sang in tune, my hunter and I, and when he ripped the world from beneath my feet, I nearly wept with relief.

“What do you remember?”

I gazed at the red-haired man who towered over me. He looked smart in his pilot’s uniform. He was young, yet his green eyes spoke of many battles.

Every day it was the same question.

Every day I said the same thing.

“Nothing.”

It was a lie.

Spotlight: Three Ghosts & The Coming Storm

The wonderful, delightful, wise, caring, amazing (seriously, I can go on all day) Marie Ann Bailey of 1WriteWay tagged me in her Work-in-Progress post, in which she showcased her novel, Clemency.

Marie is one of the loveliest people I know, and it has been my honor and privilege to get to know her these last two years. She reminds me to enjoy my life, and what I’ve accomplished with it – and not sweat the small stuff. When one tends to live in her head most of the time – as many of us do – that reminder is huge. All the more so, because Marie means it – her sincerity wraps me up just like a warm hug, and I don’t know what I’d do without her! So, thank you, Marie.

The rules for the WIP blog hop (which are more like guidelines anyway, thank you, Captain Barbarossa), are as follows:

  1. Link back to the post of the person who nominated you.
  2. Write a little about and give the first sentence of the first three chapters of your current work-in-progress.
  3. Nominate some other writers to do the same.

I’m working on two things right now: an expanded edition of Three Ghosts, which can be read in its on-going serial form every Monday, and editing/finessing/loophole-closing/time-travel-induced-head-banging The Coming Storm, Book Two in the Changelings series.

As that is the case, I am going to have my merry way with the rules, and reveal the cover for the Three Ghosts novella first, and excerpt-away with The Coming Storm.

Three Ghosts

Cover by Casey T. Malone

Three Ghosts cover by Casey T. Malone

What do you do when the decisions you’ve made come back to haunt you? How do you make them right? Can you, when one wrong move will mean lives lost?

Deirdre O’Brien, an American living in Dublin, and one-time political activist, married the wrong man – and had to kill him to save the lives of thousands. Fifteen years later, Pearse Finnegan is back from the dead, with a horrific plan to destroy the tenuous peace between Belfast, Dublin and London. Once Dee shared Pearse’s madness, but no more, and saving the day – or at least London – means throwing herself at a seedy underworld, where nothing is what it seems, and trust is a commodity too short in supply.

She has three days – three days, and three ghosts. She will confront them, or risk becoming one herself.

Three Ghosts will be available on March 17.

Changelings: The Coming Storm

Fresh from their misadventures in Into the Mist, Changelings Maureen O’Malley and Sean McAndrew have been abandoned in a world devoid of magic. The gateway is closed and the one man who could teach them to use the power in their blood is dead. Faced with expulsion, Maureen and Sean have nowhere to go but to the McAndrew estate, run by Sean’s mysterious Aunt Margaret.

But even deep in the Scottish Highlands, Faerie whispers and sinister magic spun by the treacherous king of the Fae, Nuada Silver Arm, reach out to snatch them in the night – and this time, returning home is no longer an option. This time, in order to thwart the king, they must protect the McAndrew family, no matter the cost to themselves.

Slipping between the shifting lands of the Fae, the last days of World War Two, and the heady months leading up to the Jacobean Rebellion of 1745, the war between Man and Fae will come to its dramatic conclusion in Changelings: The Coming Storm

Chapter 1

The wind tore at his face and bit his hands as he gripped the blade that had been his prize for defeating Nuada Silver Arm’s enemies. Now, Nuada, king of the Fae, stood before him and pulled terrors from his soul.

Chapter 2

“Do you have any idea what you put us through, Miss Maureen?”

Maureen avoided Mother Superior’s cool grey eyes and stared down at her hands. She tried not to pick at the frayed tear in the trousers she’d been wearing for – well, for almost a year, now.

Not really. She and Sean had spent less than a day in the Faerie otherworld, Tír na nÓg, but it seemed like a year. To her, and to the good Sisters of Carrickahowley Abbey.

Chapter 3

“What do you remember?”

Dubh lifted his eyes to the red-haired man standing over him. He looked smart in his pilot’s uniform. He was young, yet his green eyes spoke of many battles.

Every day it was the same question.

Every day he said the same thing: “Nothing.”

It was a lie.

The Coming Storm will be available Fall 2015.

And now, for the fun part – I hereby invite Bradley Corbett to tell us a little bit about himself and his various projects. Bradley is in charge of what I call the Green Embers Experience – he blogs, he encourages via The Building Rome project, and he reviews at Green Embers Recommends. He even manages to corral me into something resembling order so that we can bring you the occasional podcast, The Not So Shocking News Dialogues. In addition to all that, he writes fiction and draws comics, and I definitely want him to showcase all the work he’s put into the world of Green Embers.

A little bit about Brad, in his own words:

Bradley Corbett

Bradley Corbett

My name is Bradley Corbett and I am a bonafide blogger. My day job is working on a special escalation team within a customer service organization. This has granted me the great opportunity to work with individuals from around the globe, which provides a great sense of challenge and fun. I currently reside in Utah.

… When I started blogging, I discovered that the only person keeping me from being happy, was me. So every week I make a concerted effort on improving myself to be the best man I can be. It is a slow process but one that I feel I am succeeding in. These thoughts of improvement and overcoming personal obstacles is what brought about the Building Rome weekly event that I host.

I absolutely love blogging. This has been my favorite hobby even over watching TV, playing video games or even reading. I feel it is because it is not passive but an active hobby where I have to create things – things ranging from my messy writing to my messy art. Content you may find on this blog are my opinions, thoughts, flash fiction and random doodles. I say ‘this’ blog because I have others as well.

If you would like to know more about me, I have 101 facts about me that can be a fairly amusing read.

Revealed: Memoirs of a Dilettante, Vol. 2

A: D! D! Check it out!

D: What, woman? Good gods, what is the time? I’m aware you keep the hours of owls, but the rest of us do not.

A: Oh, you’ll perk right up for this . . .

D: Is this more of your innuendo talk?

A: My innuendo–you’ve come up with plenty of innuendos yourself, Druid, and the lady we’re about to showcase has had more than a few to say to you as well.

D: Oh. . . OH! You mean Helena! Why didn’t you say so from the first, Mistress A? What news from our favorite Dilettante?

A: Instead of telling you, I think perhaps I’ll do what all writers are admonished to do, and show you!

COMING SPRING 2015

Memoirs of a Dilettante Volume Two is the second collection of reminiscences, following Helena Hann-Basquiat, a self-proclaimed dilettante who will try anything just to say that she has, and her twenty-something niece, who she has dubbed the Countess Penelope of Arcadia.

Speaking of Arcadia, this volume delves into Helena’s childhood, as she revisits what she calls the Arcadia of the mind — that place that keeps us trapped and holds us back from our potential. Some of her most personal stories are included here, interspersed with hilarious stories of misadventure. It’s not a novel, really, and it’s not a memoir, by the strictest definition. But most of what follows, as they say, is true. Sort of. Almost. From a certain point of view.

Discover Helena’s tales for the first time or all over again, with new notes and annotations for the culturally impaired — or for those who just need to know what the hell was going through her mind at the time!

Helena is going to be running a crowdfunding/pre-order campaign at Pubslush, a community focused solely on indie writers, and has set up a profile there to launch Memoirs of a Dilettante Volume Two.

About the Author

helena-h-bThe enigmatic Helena Hann-Basquiat dabbles in whatever she can get her hands into just to say that she has.

She’s written cookbooks, ten volumes of horrible poetry that she then bound herself in leather she tanned poorly from cows she raised herself and then slaughtered because she was bored with farming.

She has an entire portfolio of macaroni art that she’s never shown anyone, because she doesn’t think that the general populous or, “the great unwashed masses” as she calls them, would understand the statement she was trying to make with them.

Some people attribute the invention of the Ampersand to her, but she has never made that claim herself.

In 2014, she published Memoirs of a Dilettante Volume One, several e-books which now make up Volume Two, as well as a multimedia collaborative piece of meta-fictional horror entitled JESSICA.

Memoirs of a Dilettante Volume One is available HERE in e-book for Kindle or HERE in paperback.

Helena writes strange, dark fiction under the name Jessica B. Bell.

Revealed… Changelings: Into the Mist. I’m trying really hard not to grin like a madwoman right now!

D: Oh bloody hell, woman – are you seriously going to set about revealing everyone else’s work instead of ours–

A: Uh, D?

D: I mean, do you know how many days there are until our book releases?!

A: Why yes, I do–

D: I mean, certainly you left it vague enough, but this is really too much. First you don’t post–

A: D!

D: And then you play host to the mistress of creepy (although I do rather like those…)

A: Dubh Súile mac Alasdair!

D: Good gods, woman. I didn’t know you could shout so loud.

A: Me neither. If you’re quite done, could you take a look at the top of the post, the top left of the post and, oh yeah, the center bottom?

D: At the top of the — oh.

A: Satisfied?

D: Speechless, A. Well done.

A: Indeed. It has been a bit of a slog, and I’m pretty sure I resemble a wild-eyed hermit more than I care to admit (which is going to make sitting for my headshot on Thursday so much fun), but the cover art for Changelings has been finalized. I must say, I’m pretty proud of it.

D: Well, don’t just rest on your laurels, woman – make your announcement!

A: I thought you were admiring?

D: I am, but tell the people, A!

A: (Eye roll) Right. So, while the Druid admires my handiwork… silently… I’m here to officially announce the Changelings: Into the Mist blog tour volunteer request! If you would like to feature Changelings’ official release announcement on your online space starting November 12, just fill out the form below – or shoot me an email.

D: Don’t forget about the review copies.

A: So much for silent. I was getting to that, D. And stop tapping your foot at me. You look like–

D: A.

A: Oh, fine. At the bottom of the contact form, you will note that review copies of Changelings will also be made available to those who are interested. If you do take one, all I ask is that you post your review on your online space by December 31, 2014.

D: Don’t forget, A – those that read the beta version are in for a surprise.

A: Surprise? They’re in for 150 extra pages, if they decide to review/buy/borrow! And with that little nugget, we’re going to bid you all a good night – thank you for reading!

A: See what I mean, D? Excited isn’t quite the word. Ever since I stumbled upon a darling’d comment at the Accidental Cootchie Mama, and had the privilege of reading one of Helena’s “Charming” Friday Fictioneer posts, I’ve been hooked. After that moment, I spent the next couple of days catching up on her work. That ‘hook’ turned into a real appreciation for her style, wit, general outlook and most importantly, the world and characters she created.  Her tone ranges from seriously wicked to heart-breakingly honest, and everything in between. I cannot wait to read the coming memoirs.

I am so ridiculously pleased to know Helena, and count her among my people – I owe her so many pancakes (and I think she owes me a box or five of tissues) but all the same, I hope I’m never out of her debt. She has an incredible talent, and she is going to go far. So, check out her site, read her fantastic stories and when you’re done, take a gander at the ebooks her alter-ego, Jessica B. Bell spits out from her dungeon abode!
