Changelings on Tour: Charles Yallowitz

Charles Yallowitz

Charles Yallowitz

Day five of the Changelings Blog tour has the amazing scribe of Windemere, Charles Yallowitz, as host.

Like so many, I met Charles and Green Embers right around the same time, and got to know Charles as a varied writer through The Community Storyboard, as well as his own site, The Legends of Windemere.

Let me tell you, Charles has legions of stories hidden away in his soul. And remarkably, he has a story arc and a general idea for most of them (although I suspect there are a few hiding away in the crevices of his mind, waiting to surprise him).

The Legends of Windemere series currently has five books available, which Charles putting out at least three per year since his debut in 2013. To say he is prolific is an understatement. Prolific wishes it was Charles.

On his blog, Charles keeps readers entertained with a variety of posts – from the mechanics of writing and fantasy tropes, to very amusing dalliances amongst the “Ye Olde (Spell/Magic/Assassin/Magical Creature) Shoppe,” which are hilarious.

Charles is also a diligent promoter of other indie authors and I am so very honored to be amongst their number. Thank you so much for the last two years of learning, and inspiration, Charles!

D: . . .

A: I’m kidding – well, not really. It is Mr. Heffner’s birthday today – but you know what all those people have in common, D?

Review Excerpts for Legends of Windemere: Prodigy of Rainbow Tower:

Prodigy Cover Final“Something I find unique about this fantasy novel that I don’t often find in others, is that the hero, Luke Callindor is rather of the unlucky variety. He does not get everything he asks for, he stumbles, falls, gets knocked down (literally)and taught lessons as he goes. This is helping him to grow into the hero that was promised in the first book.” – Ionia Martin

“Nyx is such a strong personality. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her and more of the other characters, new and already known, with the rich tapestry of Windemere unfolding in between intense actions scenes and moments of kindness and budding friendships.” – Danielle Taylor

Bodacious bard bandies ballads

By Green Embers

By Green Embers

D: Bodacious?

A: You have a problem with bodacious?

D: No, but didn’t it go out of style sometime in the late twentieth century?

A: The time-traveler is worried about going out of style?

D: Well, yes – I’d like to fit in.

A: Fit in? You wear a cloak and carry a big sword and staff for crying out loud.

D: Yes, in your head – but when I was a man-about-town, I always tried to keep abreast of what was fashionable.

A: Dandy.

D: What was that?

A: You heard me. Popinjay.

D: Is it my fault I cut a fine figure?

A: (Eye roll) No – so are you going to bandy ballads or what, you bodacious bard?

D: You are incorrigible.

A: Indeed – take it away, D!

D: If you read this blog, chances are you’re either A) crazy, B) a fan of the written word, or C) a writer yourself—

A: Do they have to be just one of those things?

D: . . . No – likely they’re all three.

A: Likely.

D: In that case, everyone who reads this should be as excited as you and I are to be a part of the Legends of Windemere Blog Tour and Cover Reveal blitz starting November 25. If you would like to feature that truly bodacious scribe, Charles Yallowitz’ third tale in the series, Allure of the Gypsies, head on over to his blog, Legends of Windemere and sign up!

A: Sarah M. Cradit, of . . . And then there was Sarah is also doing a cover reveal for her third book in the House of Crimson and Clover series, The Illusions of Eventide. The reveal is on November 16, so contact Sarah today if you would like to participate.

D: A, why haven’t you watched Game of Thrones yet?

A: Um, that was a quick shift – never hear of transitions, D?

D: . . .

A: Fine. I don’t have cable, and I’m currently blacklisted at the library . . . again.

D: You need to stop doing that.

A: You’re telling me! So no, I haven’t yet indulged in Game of Thrones – why do you ask?

D: Because one of our favorite people, Helena Hann-Basquiat did a wonderful send-up for the Friday Fictioneers.

A: Ah, so it’s Helena’s distinctive voice and knife-edge humor that drew you in, yes?

D: Um. Yes. That’s right.

A: (Eye-roll) Good to know you’re still a guy, D, despite your years.

D: I’m feeling like I should be offended by that.

A: You probably should, but maybe for the sake of brevity, you should let it slide.

D: All right. Just this once.

A: Cheers, D. In other news, There’s a new prompt at the Community Storyboard – check out Julian Froment’s prompt and prose for “Tomorrow.”

D: And the heavens only know if A will actually manage a response to the prompt (lazy wench) but click away below for those who have lent their creativity and prose to the CSB in response to the prompt.

A: You know, I could – there’s always tomorrow…

D: . . .

A: See what I did there, with the—

D: Yes, A. I see.

A: Kill joy.

Well, that’s all for this evening folks – I’ve been a pretty lazy blogger this week. For more outside-world updates, you can catch D and I at Green Embers’ Recommends – we run our shtick on most Fridays and we have some fun ones planned for this Friday. In the meantime, check out GE Recommend’s entertainment reviews – it’s well worth the click!

In Review: Catalysts

Catalysts, a new horror novella from author Charles Yallowitz (Legends of Windemere), is perfect for a quick afternoon read. Even better if it is a drizzly and/or dark afternoon, because then the particular spell of this book can work its full – horrific – magic on your soul.

Catalysts presents readers with a true monster, one that is fascinating to watch, even as my stomach twisted a little bit at the carnage it wrecks. As much as I wanted to slap them, the characters are very real. It was easy to see a little bit of myself not only in the two main characters, but also in the ensemble cast. These men and women were the readers’ entry into the terror going on within the celebrity convention and each one was a well-drawn personality to either hope for, or revile.

I particularly enjoyed the juxtaposition of the scenes in the elevator with the chaos and slaughter outside. And as a warning to those faint of heart, it is slaughter. Personally, I enjoyed it – the descriptions were delightfully gross, and at one point, I swore I could feel the squelching of blood under my toes. The elevator scenes themselves were harrowing in their own way. It is never an easy thing to watch two people help each other spiral deeper into a personal darkness.

The story was tight and the culprits. . . I don’t want to spoil anything, but it was clever. Not only that, the book itself was a slow-burn creepy that hit me the next day. I enjoyed it and I recommend it – Catalysts is perfect for this time of year, or any time you want to peer into the darkness. And lucky you, you can buy it at Amazon!

Review based on a pre-release digital copy provided by the author.

From the Author

When trapped in an elevator together, Jeffrey and Darla learn that misery doesn’t always love company. With the screams of death and chaos echoing from outside, they find themselves slowly slipping into a world of fear and darkness they may never recover from. All the while, something is terrorizing the convention outside and turning the guests and celebrities into psychotic monsters.

D: Four posts in 1 day A? Shouldn’t you be writing?

A: This is writing.

D: I mean with words that will be added to my story.

A: Um, yeah about that. My brain died sometime in the night.

D: . . . You’re not going to try to eat mine, are you?

A: No, sorry – I’m not sure it would help.

D: Are you saying my brains aren’t good enough for you, A? Because I happen to know that my brain is of excellent quality.

A: First, not a zombie. Second, you’re a character, a figment of my imagination. No matter how real or annoying you seem, your brain does me no good as it is not real. But don’t worry, D. If I were a fictional zombie, I’m sure I’d find your brains quite tasty.

D: Gee A, I think that’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.

A: I will never understand you.
